UNLV makes history in their second Power Four win of the 2024 season making a case for the CFP

History was made on Friday night in what initially appeared to be just another primetime college football game. What could have gone either way turned into one of the best matchups of the year so far. The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels pulled off a stunning road win against the Kansas Jayhawks, marking a significant achievement for the program.

Thanks to recent changes to the College Football Playoff (CFP) rules, the Rebels are now positioning themselves as legitimate contenders. By season’s end, they could be in the mix with the top 12 teams in the country.

The new CFP format follows a 5+7 model, where the five highest-ranked conference champions automatically qualify for the playoff, along with the next seven highest-ranked teams, regardless of conference. While the Power Five conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC) typically produce the top contenders, the highest-ranked Group of Five champion can secure an automatic bid if they finish as one of the top five conference champions. If not, they’ll still have a shot through one of the seven at-large bids, but there’s no guarantee unless they rank among the top seven.

If UNLV continues to win, they could secure a spot in the CFP, potentially replicating the surprise success of TCU from last season.

Although it’s only three weeks into the season, UNLV is already proving they belong in the conversation. They’ve notched two significant road victories over Power Five teams, defeating both the Houston Cougars and Kansas Jayhawks. This marks the first time since 1984 that the Rebels have started 3-0.

The last time UNLV started this strong, Randall Cunningham was their quarterback. This year, it’s Matthew Sluka who’s making headlines, particularly with his rushing abilities. He’s the first Rebels QB since 2022 to rush for 100 yards in a game.

While there are challenges ahead, including a tough matchup against Boise State—who nearly upset a top-ten Oregon team—UNLV is building a compelling case for a CFP spot. They’ll need to improve their passing game and find more ways to involve star wide receiver Ricky White, especially against stronger defenses. Relying solely on the run game won’t be sustainable against teams with tougher defensive fronts than Kansas.

Next up for the Rebels are games against Fresno State, Syracuse, Boise State, and Oregon State. The path ahead won’t be easy, but Barry Odom and his Runnin’ Rebels are definitely a team to watch. The hunt is officially on.
