Fire Erupts in Ventura County, Burning 55 Acres in Santa Clara Riverbed

A wildfire broke out in Ventura County on Monday evening, spreading rapidly through the Santa Clara riverbed as strong winds swept the area.

Dubbed the “Auto Fire,” the blaze was first reported around 7 p.m. near Victoria Avenue and Ventura Boulevard. By 11:45 p.m., firefighters had halted its forward progress, mapping it at approximately 55 acres with 0% containment.

Fire crews faced challenging conditions as high winds accelerated the fire’s growth. Over 100 firefighters from Ventura City Fire, Oxnard Fire, and Federal Fire Ventura County worked tirelessly to extinguish hotspots and boost containment efforts.

The fire remained confined to the river bottom, with no structures under immediate threat. However, as flames neared Victoria Avenue, authorities shut down northbound traffic on the 101 Freeway around 9 p.m. for safety.

The blaze also burned close to the River Ridge Golf Club and the 101 Freeway. Although an evacuation order was issued for the Santa Clara River area between the 101 Freeway and Victoria Avenue, no residential neighborhoods required evacuation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
